iOS 12 – Siri Shortcuts and Tableau
Intro
One of the cool new features implemented in iOS 12 was Siri Shortcuts, which is an amalgamation of an app called Workflow and Apple's own software. It's a tool that's integrated directly into iPhones, iPads, and Apple Watches. With this cool new software comes a slew of tricks. Today, I'm going to show you how to integrate health data into excel and eventually into Tableau using your iPhone.
Initial Setup
You will need to start with this workflow, provided to me by a @vulkman on reddit. Open this link on your iPhone and save the workflow. It's pretty easy setup. Additionally, you will need to be able to export the data, so I would just use this workflow I made to streamline the process. The second workflow allows you to export data from your iPhone to Dropbox or iCloud Drive.
Prep Your Data
I love using this method for showing active calories. It allows me to visualize how active and when I am active in my day. So start the process in iOS 12's Shortcut's app and select the "Export Health Data" icon and select allow access. For the purpose of this exercise, I'm going to draw data hourly by how many steps I take:
1: Open the Shortcuts app and Select "Export Health Data" |
2: Change the Start date to a couple of days before (as I did) and then group the data by hour so you get 12 measures per day. |
3: Now interact with the share sheet and click on "Shortcuts" |
4: From this Menu, select the "Save to Any Drive" option I added. |
5: Select your preference of a storage option, |
Interacting with the Data
Now that we've converted the data, locate it either on iCloud Drive or Dropbox and then open the data in Excel. You won't exactly see something pretty when you open it up:
To solve this cluster of data, simply select all of the A Column and go to data – text to columns.
You could further separate the date data, but everything you need is now formatted correctly and ready to go!
